Dangerous, subversive, seditious: the reversal of the path of violence

Abstract

In this essay, I address the installation Dangerous, subversive, seditious (Notebooks of the Brazilian people) by Leila Danziger, made for the exhibition “Hiatus: the memory of dictatorial violence in Latin America”. The starting point of the exhibition curated by Márcio Seligmann-Silva were the archives of the National Truth Commission (CNV). The objective of this essay is to think about the representation of violence and the victims of the dictatorship as it appears in the work of the artist from Rio de Janeiro. For this, I dialogue with three authors: Emmanuel Lévinas, Judith Butler and Susan Sontag. Highlighting the signs of an elaboration in process where flaws and fissures provoke the viewer’s gaze and provide the presence of unique apparitions and stories, Danziger builds an atlas that misinterprets the portrayal of victims and reverses the path of violence.

Luiz Cláudio da Costa, Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (UERJ)

Pesquisador bolsista Produtividade do CNPq, com pós-doutorado na Université de Paris 1-Sorbonne (bolsa Estágio Sênior da Capes, 2014); membro do conselho consultivo da revista VIS da UNB; membro do conselho editorial da revista Modos; professor associado do Instituto de Artes e do PPGARTES da UERJ; coordenador do PPGARTES entre 2010 e 2013; bolsista PROCIÊNCIA/UERJ desde 2008. Graduado pela University of Northern Iowa (1986); mestre (1993) e doutor (1999) em Comunicação pela UFRJ, com estágio de pesquisa na New York University (1998). É membro das equipes de pesquisa Aesthetica, Art et Philosophie e Fictions et intereactction da Universidade de Paris I-Sorbonne e líder do grupo Tecnologias da Arte: sistemas, dispositivos e fissuras. Desenvolve a pesquisa A gravidade da imagem: apropriação e repetição na arte contemporânea (Poéticas do arquivo). Publicou os livros A gravidade da imagem: arte e memória na contemporaneidade (Quartet, 2014) e Cinema brasileiro (anos 70-70), dissimetria, oscilação e simulacro (7 Letras, 2000). Foi editor responsável pelas coletâneas Narrativas, ficções, subjetividades (em parceria com Sheila Cabo Geraldo - Quartet, 2012), Dispositivos de registros na arte contemporânea (Contra Capa, 2010). Foi vice-presidente da ANPAP no biênio 2011-12. Foi curador das exposições Tempo-Matéria (MAC-Niterói, 2010), Carlos Zilio: paisagens 1974-1978 (Galeria Candido Portinari, UERJ, 2011), Paisagem e extremos (CCJF, Rio de Janeiro, 2012), Cidade e desaparecimento (CCJF, Rio de Janeiro, 2011). Publicou na ARS (USP), Arte e Ensaios (UFRJ, Poiéisis (UFF), entre outras.
