A designer italiana Nanni Strada foi pioneira em aportar às consagradas convenções da moda os temas do design e da produção industrial. Após a primeira Coleção Etnológica em 1973, em 1974, inspirada nos estudos do etnógrafo Max Tilke, projetou "o Manto e a Pele", uma pesquisa sobre os componentes primários de planejamento da roupa como recusa às normas de confecção típicas do estilismo. Em 1979 recebeu o prêmio Compasso de Ouro pela primeira roupa no mundo sem costura[i]. E em 1986, com os trajes de viagem "Torchons", deu início à pesquisa sobre a compressibilidade da roupa e seu uso nômade.
