Abstract

This is an edited and corrected version of the interview given on August 23, 2022, by Adrian Kohler and Basil Jones, founders of the South African company Handspring Puppet Company to Mario Piragibe for the 4th Meeting Poetics of the Inanimate, organized by the Research Group: Scenic Poetics: Visual and Performative (CNPq). The conversation addresses some of the main moments of the company's more than 30-year career, with highlights for the productions War Horse and Walk with Amal, motivated by discussions about the discursive power of puppet construction and puppet theater as a tool for creation of animal protagonists without the need to humanize them.

Bonequeiro, co-fundador e diretor artístico da Handspring Puppet Company, África do Sul. Doutor honorário em Literatura pela Universidade da Cidade do Cabo (UCT).

Basil Jones, Handspring Puppet Company

Co-fundador e produtor executivo da Handspring Puppet Company, Doutor honorário em Literatura pela Universidade da Cidade do Cabo (UCT).

Mario Ferreira Piragibe, Federal University of Uberlândia

Doutor em Artes Cênicas pela Universidade Federal do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (2011), obtendo o grau de mestre em Teatro (2007) e de bacharel em Artes Cênicas com habilitação em Teoria do Teatro (1999) pela mesm instituição. Ator e professor de teatro, é Professor Efetivo do Curso de Teatro do Instituto de Artes (IARTES) da Universidade Federal de Uberlandia - UFU. Foi professor substituto do curso de Direção teatral da Escola de comunicação da UFRJ. Pesquisador com especialização no estudo de características contemporâneas do teatro de formas animadas. Sua pesquisa aborda interfaces da linguagem do teatro de animação com poéticas contemporâneas da cena teatral brasileira, com ênfase para os processos de criação e formação do ator dedicado ao teatro de formas animadas. É integrante da companhia PeQuod-Teatro de Animação, desde 2005.
