Author Biography

Denise di Santos, Teatro Lambe-Lambe / ABTB Centro Unima Brasil

Denise Batista dos Santos, known as Denise di Santos, was born in Tom Zé de Irará. A self-taught educator and a militant for creative freedom, she moved to the capital at the age of 9, helping her family make a living in Salvador. Like many young people, she joined the church theater group, where she met her first director, Tiago Lima, who offered her several opportunities that helped her grow professionally. As an adult, after getting married, she moved to Brasília but never stopped doing puppet theater, spreading this art form wherever she went. In 1975, she returned to Bahia and began working with education and puppet theater, being invited to a major project in Pelourinho around 1982, "Os doces da Rainha". Together with Elias Bonfim, Evandro Nere, Ismine Lima, Gil Teixeira, Noli Silva, and Piter Leão, she founded the Puppet Theater Association in September 1985. Four years later, Lambe-Lambe Theater was born.
