Abstract

The article analyzes a pedagogical project involving the creation of textile masks carried out with Portuguese high school students, in partnership between the Fashion and Textile Design and Production program at the Manuel Teixeira Gomes Higher Institute and three public schools in the Algarve. The project combines fashion, arts, and sustainability, with the aim of introducing concepts of product design, costume design, hand sewing, embroidery, and upcycling. The research adopts a qualitative approach, utilizing participant observation, informal conversations, and interpretive analysis of records produced during the workshops. The activities are organized into three stages: theoretical contextualization, conception, and practice. The results indicate the development of technical, aesthetic, and socio-emotional skills, with an emphasis on creative autonomy, the appreciation of manual work, and reflection on the reuse of materials. The masks also reveal connections to identity, cultural belonging, and symbolic expression. It is concluded that the experience reaffirms the potential of fashion design as an interdisciplinary educational practice, capable of integrating art, technique, and sustainability in educational contexts.
