Between Metaphor-Images and Visual Narratives: artistic methodologies driving Teaching and Research at the University

Abstract

This article is based on on experiences in higher education to explore the use of artistic methodologies in educational research and teacher training, in line with the epistemological changes underway in academia. The main objective is to reflect on the challenges and contributions of these approaches to the teaching, learning and research processes. Supported by the educational perspective of visual culture (Hernández, 2011, 2013a; 2020) and Art-Based Methodologies (Hernández, 2013b; Dias, 2013; Irwin, 2013), we discuss issues related to non-verbal language as a catalyst for exploring themes in teaching and research. We conclude that deviating from the traditional text-centered academic logic towards the production of visual narratives opens up new and multiple possibilities for learning in contemporary times.

Doutorando em Artes Visuais pelo Programa de Pós-Graduação em Artes Visuais (PPGAV) da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, na área de concentração História, Teoria e Crítica de Arte (HTC). Doutorando em História pelo Programa de Pós-Graduação em História da Universidade Federal de Pelotas (PPGH/UFPel) com bolsa pelo Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq). Mestre em Artes Visuais na linha de pesquisa Educação em Artes e Processo de Formação Estética pelo Programa de Pós-Graduação em Artes da Universidade Federal de Pelotas (PPGArtes/UFPel 2022). Especialista em Artes na terminação Ensino e Percursos Poéticos (UFPel, 2021) Licenciado em Artes Visuais pela mesma instituição (UFPel, 2019), com período sanduíche na Universidade de Aveiro, Portugal (2019). Sócio Honorário da Associação Estação Viva, freguesia de Canelas e Fermelã, Estarreja, Portugal. Atualmente é acadêmico do curso de Bacharelado em Museologia (ICH/UFPel). Atua como pesquisador no MIRARTE: Grupo de Pesquisa em Arte, Cultura Visual e Educação (UFSM/CNPq) e no Núcleo de Estudos sobre Museus, Ciência e Sociedade (NEMuCS/UFPel).
