Call for publication in the Thematic Dossier Artist's Atelier

2025-03-11

The Apotheke Journal (ISSN 2447-1267), a publication linked to the Graduate Program in Visual Arts at the State University of Santa Catarina (PPGAV/UDESC), is dedicated to publishing original works in the field of Visual Arts and its connections with teaching and learning. For the final issue of 2025, the journal invites researchers, educators, artists, and professionals from various fields to submit original articles, essays, visual essays, interviews, translations, and experience reports on the theme:
"Artist’s Studio."

With this theme, the journal aims to open space for reflections on the studio/atelier as a multifaceted space. It can be understood as a place of experimentation, where study, research, and reflection are inherent actions within the flow between "mistakes and successes," "discoveries and deepening" in artistic practice. If that is the case, artistic creation is directly linked to the unique conditions of this space and what exists and happens within it. According to the artist Sergio Fingermann, everything that "inhabits" an artist's studio constitutes an "affective territory" that enables—or even conditions—the beginning of artistic production. These initial ideas already outline the investigative scope of this theme.

However, the studio/atelier can also be examined from the perspective of a space that is both private and public. Within it, both the most intimate strategies of thought and the development of an artistic career share space with the encounters and divergences among other agents in the art circuit. The studio, then, is the first "showcase" of artistic production and thought, but also a "forum" for multiple exchanges; Knowledge exchange (when it also serves as an art teaching space), intergenerational experience exchange (when it becomes a meeting place for artists), association exchanges (such as collectives, cooperatives, and networking with producers, curators, and gallery owners), even direct commercialization. All of this can be analyzed from the premises of contemporaneity and the records of art history.

Submissions in Portuguese, English, and Spanish are welcome.

Submission deadline: September 2025 (must follow the guidelines of the Apotheke Journal: https://revistas.udesc.br/index.php/apotheke/about/submissions).
