Between war, doctrine, and technology: a history of the doctrinal evolution of the United States Army (1959-2017)

Abstract

This research examines the history of the doctrinal evolution of the United States Army in the period from 1959 to 2017. The article examines the dynamics of the changing conflict paradigm and its implications for the transformation of the U.S. Ground Force. Regarding methodological procedures, the research relied on the use of documents such as FM 3-24 Counterinsurgency (2006), the National Security Strategy (2017), and the Joint Operational Access Concept (2012). From a broad historical perspective and based on specialized literature, the scrutiny of the documents contributed to the understanding of the doctrinal evolution of the case under study, in the period from the Vietnam War to the War on Terror. In order to contribute to the history of the present time, we present how the processes assessed point to the contemporaneity of U.S. Army doctrine. The study was based on the theoretical arguments of Military History for the study of War, from multiple dimensional forms, based on cultural, technological, social, and also political fields

Fernando da Silva Rodrigues é Doutor em História Política pela Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro, professor do Programa de Pós-Graduação em História da Universidade Salgado de Oliveira, coordenador do Grupo de Pesquisa História Militar, Política e Fronteiras - CNPq, coordenador do GT de História Militar da ANPUH-RJ, pesquisador sênior do Centro de Estudos Estratégicos do Exército e Jovem Cientista do Nosso Estado - FAPERJ.

Augusto W. M. Teixeira Júnior, Universidade Federal da Paraíba (UFPB)

Doutor em Ciência Política na Área de Concentração de Relações Internacionais pela Universidade Federal de Pernambuco (UFPE). Mestre em Ciência Política e Bacharel em Ciências Sociais pela mesma instituição. Realizou Estágio Pós-Doutoral em Ciências Militares pela Escola de Comando e Estado-Maior do Exército (ECEME). Atualmente é professor Adjunto IV do Departamento de Relações Internacionais da Universidade Federal da Paraíba (UFPB) e membro permanente do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Ciência Política e Relações Internacionais (PPGCPRI/UFPB). Pesquisador do Centro de Estudos Estratégicos do Exército Brasileiro (CEEEX), área de Geopolítica e Estratégias Militares (2018 - 2020).
