Recording Analysis as a Resource for Developing Ornamentation: a study applied to the Cello Suite No. 2 in D minor by J. S. Bach

Abstract

This article explores the role of ornamentation in contemporary musical practice, using Johann Sebastian Bach's Suite No. 2 in D minor for cello (BWV 1008) as a case study. Based on observations by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach and Daniel Leech-Wilkinson, the study analyzes 17 recordings by 13 different artists, spanning a period of 78 years, to understand how contemporary musicians approach ornamentation. The methodology involves a comparative analysis of recordings and written notation, highlighting the importance of attentive listening and studying past interpretations. It is concluded that ornamentation not only enriches musical expression but also reflects the creativity of the performer. The discussion on the pedagogy of ornamentation emphasizes the need for musicians to develop their own interpretative language rather than strictly adhering to historical conventions.

Author Biographies

William Teixeira, Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul

William Teixeira é Professor Adjunto no Curso de Música da Universidade Federal de Mato Grosso do Sul desde 2016. Atuou como pesquisador visitante na Universidade de Harvard (Fulbright Junior Faculty 2022/2023) e no IRCAM (ERC-CONFAP-FUNDECT 2023). É Bacharel em música com habilitação em violoncelo pela UNESP (2012) e completou seus estudos de Pós-Graduação sob a orientação do compositor Silvio Ferraz, sendo bolsista FAPESP. Obteve os títulos de Mestre em música pela UNICAMP (2014) e Doutor em música pela USP (2017), realizando estágios de pesquisa na Paul Sacher Stiftung (Suíça) e na Akademie der Künste, Berlim (Alemanha). Prosseguiu sua formação por meio de Pós-Doutorado em Filosofia na PUC-RS, concentrando-se na pesquisa sobre filosofia analítica da arte.

Guilherme Ferreira, Universidade Federal do Mato Grosso do Sul - UFMS

Guilherme da Silva Ferreira é aluno da Universidade Federal do Mato Grosso do Sul, cursando Licenciatura em Música desde 2022.  Atua como bolsista de Iniciação científica do CNPQ desde 2022, desenvolvendo pesquisas relacionadas ao Violoncelo e à Filosofia da Música, sob orientação do Professor William Teixeira. No ano de 2023, realizou um intercâmbio acadêmico, onde estudou na Universidade de São Paulo, aperfeiçoando seus estudos de Violoncelo com André Micheletti. Iniciou seus estudos no ano de 2017 com Henrique Lucena e Marcelo Geronimo. Começou suas atividades profissionais na Orquestra Sinfônica de Campo Grande, atuando como concertino convidado. Realizou masterclass com violoncelistas como André Micheletti, Kayami Satomi, Fábio Presgrave, entre outros.
