sínteses, raciocínios e demais cálculos intertextuais entre noções e conceitos que
poderiam espraiar, territorializar e melhor destrinçar o objeto histórico em recorte:
“demonstrar que o teatro brasileiro colaborou intensamente para a formação de
uma consciência antiescravista nos espectadores” (p. 24). Para tão alentado
volume, a intenção soa por demais modesta.
Outro impasse advém do próprio título: o estudo da literatura dramática não
abarca todo o teatro então praticado, a menos que se tome a parcela pelo todo.
Quer dizer, nem a escravatura emerge historicamente circunstanciada no estudo,
nem o teatro então praticado, em suas variadas instâncias, sendo a mais relevante
a que diz respeito aos intérpretes – alguns deles afrodescendentes. Frustra-se o
leitor, desse modo, que pressupõe encontrar no volume as relações entre o teatro
e a escravidão no país. Na Conclusão, quando se aguarda um dimensionamento
mais efetivo da análise, o autor inicia pelo diagnóstico de Evaristo de Moraes em
1924 quanto à participação das letras nas lutas abolicionistas – indicada como
muito modesta −, além da conferência de João Luso na Academia Brasileira de
Letras, em 1938, que remete ao mesmo juízo. Análises posteriores continuaram
insistindo nessa tecla desabonadora e, somente a partir de 1958, com a obra de
Raymond Sayers

Assim, o estudo quer filiar-se à tradição literária, e não à cênica; deixando de
lado a já apreciável estante de incursões de estudiosos sobre o assunto, com
destaque para Miriam Garcia Mendes, Flora Süssekind, Moacyr Flores ou Joel
Rufino dos Santos, além de outras significativas contribuições em teses e artigos
na mesma direção.
