Abstract: The republican legislation, after 1890, intervened in the planning of new residences and in the use, or habitability, of the old constructions. A large amount of effort was invested in the modernization of the urban centers, through bourgeois practices, that looked after the beautifying and the sanitation of these cities. There was a great concern in moralizing the practices by new speeches that came, mainly, legitimized by the figure of the doctor-hygienist, who not only projected to remodel the cities, but also to civilize the population curing its illnesses and vices - acquired in the streets, that would be considered dangerous for the “good citizens”, which should take shelter inside theirs bourgeois houses, in a private space. In this article I intend to reflect upon the urban planning practices and the use of residences in the end of 19th century, focusing the family and the role of women, as responsible for the dissemination of the hygienist and civility practices through the education of children, aiming to mold them into “future citizens”.
